Constraints: The site was located in a high-footfall retail area, adjacent to the Leeds Rhinos training ground, and included essential flood defence works commissioned by Leeds City Council as part of the wider development.
The Challenge
This commercial solar panel installation at Morrisons Kirkstall formed part of a nationwide rollout to reduce carbon emissions and support net zero targets. Over a 4 week period, more than 880 solar panels were installed at the store, contributing to an annual CO₂ saving of over 143,160kg. The challenge was clear: reduce carbon emissions year-on-year through renewable energy solutions that align with Morrisons’ broader sustainability goals.
The Solution
We assessed the site and developed a tailored solar installation plan, incorporating safety enhancements like a secondary escape route and roof-edge barriers to reduce the need for frequent checks. We installed 886 solar panels with adaptable mounting systems, and integrated inverters to optimise energy output and ensure grid compliance. A protection panel was engineered and supplied to meet UK grid standards, with DHS’s technical support helping secure timely grid approval.
The Result
This commercial solar panel installation delivered 886 panels in under four weeks, saving approximately 143,000 kg of CO₂ annually, the equivalent of removing 103 cars from the road.
