Sigma was delighted to welcome Toby into our Design Engineering team for a week‑long work experience placement — an opportunity that offered him a first-hand look at the world of engineering design and the people who bring it to life.
From the moment he arrived, Toby approached every task with curiosity and enthusiasm. His reflections on the experience highlight not only what he learned, but also the value of opening our doors to the next generation of engineering talent.
Discovering Sigma
Toby first heard about Sigma through a friend of a friend who had previously worked with the business. That personal recommendation sparked his interest and ultimately led him to choose Sigma for his placement. It was a decision he’s glad he made.
“I was looking for an engineering placement, and someone who had worked with Sigma recommended the company. That introduction made me want to learn more, and I’m really glad I did.”
Exploring the World of Design Engineering
One of the highlights of Toby’s week was gaining insight into how our engineers and designers bring projects to life. He was particularly fascinated by the technical drawings and digital models that form the foundation of our work.
“I really enjoyed learning about drawings and how we create models of the places we survey. Seeing that process come to life was fascinating.”
Behind the Scenes of Retail Engineering
Like many students, Toby arrived with little awareness of the complex systems that keep supermarkets and retail environments running smoothly. His time with the team opened his eyes to the unseen engineering that powers everyday spaces.
“I had no idea that businesses like Sigma are the ones responsible for turning on the lights and systems in supermarkets. I didn’t realise how much goes on behind the scenes.”
A New Perspective on Engineering
Spending a week alongside experienced engineers and designers broadened Toby’s understanding of the industry and the variety of roles within it.
“Spending a week with engineers and designers showed me just how much there is within engineering and how many different types of engineering roles exist.”
Advice for Future Students
When asked what he would say to other students considering a placement in engineering design, Toby didn’t hesitate.
“Definitely do it — it’s very interesting.”
Lasting Impressions
Toby leaves Sigma with a deeper appreciation for the detail and dedication behind every project — especially the work involved in creating lighting and heating schedules for retail stores.
“I’ll always remember how much work goes into the lighting or heating schedule of a retail store. And I’ll remember how enthusiastic everyone has been — they were great to learn from.”
