The Challenge
The project involved transforming a tired retail unit into a modern M&S Food Hall while maintaining access for neighbouring businesses on one of London’s busiest high streets.
Careful retail project management was essential to coordinate multiple specialist trades, manage tight delivery windows and meet a fixed store opening date, all while ensuring surrounding retailers, residents and the local community experienced minimal disruption.
The project also required complex city-centre logistics, with delivery restrictions limiting vehicle access and careful planning needed to support both the closure of the previous store and the opening of the new Food Hall.

By bringing multiple specialist teams together under one programme, Sigma delivered a seamless retail fit out that combined expert planning, installation and retail project management from start to finish.
Sigma also coordinated the logistical transition between the former and new Tottenham Court Road stores. Working within strict city-centre access restrictions, the team carefully managed the recovery and redistribution of fixtures and equipment, alongside supplier transport requirements, to support a smooth transition and the successful opening of the new Food Hall.
Through effective retail project management, Sigma coordinated multiple specialist disciplines under a single programme, ensuring the project remained on schedule and was delivered to the high standards expected by M&S.
The Result
The new M&S Food Hall was completed on time and fully operational ahead of its grand opening on 9 June 2026.
The successful retail refurbishment created a retail environment approximately 45% larger than the previous M&S store, complete with an in-store bakery, barista-managed coffee counter and sushi bar, while allowing neighbouring businesses to continue operating throughout the construction programme.
Where possible, existing fixtures and equipment were carefully recovered and reused as part of the wider project, supporting M&S’s sustainability objectives while ensuring the transition between the former and new stores remained efficiently coordinated.
